Integration & Modelling Environments

Contents

Scope

The PAE "Integration and modelling environments" covers:

  • version control for central repositories and for software development (including model development);
  • job configuration - how to set up and define a coupled integration;
  • compilation - controlling the creation of the executable for the job;
  • job running - a framework that will control the execution of a coupled integration;
  • integration with archive systems - how the data from your model will get into your archive system.

In conjunction with other PAEs, this PAE coordinates technology reviews, providing advice and direction for the further development of related tools.

Archive Integration Software discussion at ECMWF Date TBA
The MARS data management software at ECMWF may be made available for use under a free license. This prompts us to review this software to see its suitability as a PRISM candidate tool.

Software

  • The PRISM compile and run-time environments (SCE PDF Document and SRE PDF Document)
  • Controlling the creation of executable and providing a suitable run time environment were seen as key integration activities within the EU FP5 PRISM project. As a result the SRE and SCE systems were developed and have become popular software tools within the community. These tools are built on the concept that software from multiple sources can use a single framework as long as those models can conform to a set of simple standards.

    Further information on the SCE and SRE can be found on the old FP5 PRISM project pages Links to external site. These pages give an overview of the SCE and SRE development activities during the PRISM project. It describes the achievements at the end of the project phase and is not updated anymore. Note that therefore not all links are still active.

  • Corporate Infrastructure Services, prepIFS and SMS
  • PrepIFS is a flexible User Interface framework that allows tailored graphical user interfaces to be built for the configuration of models and other software. It is integrated with SMS (Supervisor Monitor Scheduler) for the management of networks of jobs across a number of plaforms and both products are developed using Web Services technology. Within the EU FP5 PRISM project, the usefulness of prepIFS and SMS (both extensively used in operations at ECMWF) to define coupled configurations and to monitor and manage the SRE PDF Document was demonstrated. These tools are still available and their power is recognised by PRISM, but the tools are not widely used because of the level of commitment required to run these sophisticated services. At present PRISM is not requesting active development of these tools as there are other priorities. As with MARS, SMS may be made available under a free license from ECMWF.

  • Candidate tools, prepOASIS and FCM
  • The recent PRISM community meeting recognised the benefit in a tool to help users prepare the control files required for OASIS4. The prepOASIS user interface, based on prepIFS but suitable to be run stand alone, will be further developed and evaluated by the PRISM community.

    FCM (Flexible Configuration Management) is a new system that has been developed at the Met Office to provide software change control and compilation management. This has had a first review by members of the PRISM community which was positive. A further review, through use, will be conducted and this tool may be considered as a replacement to CVS and 'make' that are used by the current SCE PDF Document. It is hoped that the tools will provide a suitable environment for active model development with properly defined processes which are not directly supported in the SCE PDF Document.
