Scope
The objectives of this PRISM Area of Expertise are:
- to explore, develop and coordinate issues relating to metadata for Earth System Modelling
- to aid the development as well as to implement metadata schemes for Earth System models, couplers and data.
- to provide a forum for the discussion of metadata issues and to participate in metadata meetings of similar communities e.g. GO-ESSP and ESMF
- to maintain, document and disseminate metadata schema as well as tools for producing, checking and displaying metadata.
News & Meetings
| First Earth System Curator Workshop at GFDL | October 3-4,2006 |
|---|---|
| Attendees will present progress towards defining common vocabularies and schemas between various related projects, especially on model and grid metadata. The workshop will spend a lot of the time in detailed work on reconciling schema structure to meet the needs of modelling groups, modelling framework developers, and data framework builders. | |
| GO-ESSP Meeting , Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), USA | June 19-21, 2006 |
| Talks at the GO-ESSP meeting were broadly categorised into presentations from the data consumer and the data provider viewpoint. However under both themes metadata was a key element in the discussion. Details on the key metadata issues discussed and the involvement of the PRISM community can be found in the following summary. | |
| Exeter Metadata Meeting | May 9-11, 2006 |
| In-depth discussions on metadata topics around climate modelling and preparation for those in PRISM going to Go-ESSP. Notes from the meeting are available on the meetings page. | |
| European Geophysical Union, Vienna | April 04 , 2006 |
| A presentation on Metadata for models |

CERA
CERA is a database model that has been designed by PIK, DKRZ, and AWI to enable interchange of meta information on geo-referenced data.CF
The CF conventions for climate and forecast metadata are designed to promote the processing and sharing of files created with the netCDF API The conventions define metadata that provide a definitive description of what the data in each variable represents, and of the spatial and temporal properties of the data.METAFOR - Common Metadata for Climate Modelling Digital Repositories
The main objective of METAFOR is to develop a Common Information Model (CIM) to describe climate data and the models that produce it in a standard way, and to ensure the wide adoption of the CIM. METAFOR will address the fragmentation and gaps in availability of metadata (data describing data) as well as duplication of information collection and problems of identifying, accessing or using climate data that are currently found in existing repositoriesNMM - Numerical Model Metadata
NMM is an evolving metadata standard intended for the exchange of information about numerical models or codebases, and the simulations done using them.NDG - NERC Data Grid
To build a grid which makes data discovery, delivery and use much easier than it is now, facilitating better use of the existing investment in the curation and maintenance of quality data archives.ESMF - Earth System Modeling Framework
The Earth System Modeling Framework (ESMF) collaboration is building high-performance, flexible software infrastructure to increase ease of use, performance portability, interoperability, and reuse in climate, numerical weather prediction, data assimilation, and other Earth science applications.Curator
The Earth System Curator is an NSF sponsored research project that extends the work of the Earth System Modeling Framework (ESMF), the Earth System Grid (ESG), GO-ESSP, and other community efforts to develop infrastructure and standards for climate and weather models and datasets.
